Synopsis: Michael Beck needs a prescription refill. But to get it, he needs to answer some questions. Some very personal questions.
Once a terrifying death sentence, HIV is now preventable thanks to a powerful drug that keeps the virus from establishing an infection. But it’s not easy – patients on the drug must agree to take a pill every day and get a checkup every three months.
THE CHECKUP is the first short film to reveal the brutally-honest yet often warm relationship that develops between doctors and their patients on HIV antiviral drugs. Every three months, they work their way through a series of shockingly-intrusive questions, forming a unique and intimate bond on the front lines of what the United Nations calls the worst, most deadly epidemic in human history.
THE CHECKUP stars Latina actor Altagracia Nova as the unflappable Dr. Perez, a friendly, no-nonsense medical professional dedicated to providing care without judgement. Ms. Nova’s co-star, Joshua Torgerson, plays Michael Beck, a “high risk” patient who must share the most intimate details of his sex life.
Screening Details: Congratulations! THE CHECKUP has been selected to screen at Big Apple Film Festival (winter edition), taking place February 5-7 at the SVA Theatre at 333 W 23rd St, New York, NY. The festival feels the film “will make a wonderful edition to this season’s lineup!” THE CHECKUP screens at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, 2/5.
